Behind the scenes – Afghanistan |
We have our biggest ever shipment of slipper socks on it’s way. For the last few months, our knitters in Afghanistan have been hard at work knitting our iconic slipper socks, from their villages in Kandahar Province. As always we support them with large prepayments to enable them to produce top quality slipper socks for the Western Market. This business is really important for our knitters as the Taliban have stopped women from doing most jobs, even leaving the house exposes them to risk, so to be able to work from the security of their own homes is a godsend. Once the slipper socks have been knitted, checked and sized, we have to get them out of Afghanistan, which is not easy. Travelling by road is very dangerous, there are many bandits, very poorly maintained vehicles and the border guards can be very corrupt. But despite all the challenges, our slipper socks have made it through the Khyber Pass to Peshawar in Northern Pakistan, where they are being packed and sorted for their long journey by ship to The United Kingdom. So think of all the people involved in keeping your feet warm this Autumn! It is a long and difficult process sourcing slipper socks, so if you are a retailer and would love to share the love and help the women of Afghanistan, get in touch and join the community of One World Stockists. |
